A buddy and I seen an article in the Detroit Free Press years ago about a 1928 Ford Tri Motor plane flying to the Lake Erie Islands. So one weekend we went to Ohio to ride on it. The plane looked like it was made with galvanized barn roofing, with oil stains down both sides of the plane. I said this don't look like the picture in the news paper. They said that plane in the picture is used for show and not the one in every day service. We got on the plane, the seats were hard wood chairs with cane seats and backs. I was last on and no empty chairs. They gave me a jump seat against the rear bulkhead and next to the door. They closed the door and locked it with a 1/4 inch slide bolt on the inside, like used with a screen door.There was a 1/2 inch air gap all around the door. Seat belts on away we went, The pilot was using what looked like a long floor shift lever with a wooden shift knob, later found out it was the brake lever to steer the plane because the pilot can't see straight ahead when the tail is on the ground. We had a good low and slow flight to Put In Bay, everyone got off the plane, some people stayed at Put In Bay. We got back on the plane to go to another islad along with other people. Next thing we knew we were back on the main land??? They don't fly to the other islands on weekends. Had we known that we would have spent some time at Put In Bay. O'well it was an adventure and we got to fly in a 1928 Ford Tri Motor, so I can cross that of my bucket list.
