International 706 diesel questions

When I was a kid we had a 706 diesel. It was our understanding that it had an optional 'German Diesel' as opposed to the regular diesel engines the 706's were usually equipped with. It was also unusual in that it had the 56 series chrome shift levers. The TA lever was not the later model chrome style. I do not know the specifics of when the tractor was made. Is it possible it was a late model 706 that incorporated the newer style shifting? Also, anyone know anything about the diesel engines offered on the 706? This one supposedly had a 'German Diesel'. The implement dealer claimed that it was a 706/756 'changeover' model.

I'm wondering if the previous owner installed the newer style shifting. I know the parts were pretty compatible because we eventually rebuilt the shifting linkage and such with the components of a, I want to say 1256, purchased from a salvage yard. We purchased an entire steering pedistal which included both the steering and shifting components. I replaced the stock steering column with the adjustable tilt version that came from the salvage yard. It worked great! We farmed 30 inch rows which with fenders in as far as they could go made the platform pretty narrow. For a kid like me it was no problem squeezing through but for a larger adult the adjustable tilt wheel made it a little easier.
( I know this because my grandfather often cussed about how hard it was to get on our '7'. He had an 856 that had much more room. My grandma was a great cook and it showed in my grandpa's waist line.)

It was a great tractor. Unfortunately my father became ill with cancer and we eventually sold our farm and all our machinery. I'm in the process of trying to track it down.

I'd appreciate any info anyone can give me in regards to my questions.

thanks in advance.

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
