These whistles turn up at swap meets and are available as reproductions from antique car parts suppliers. Originally, they came with a section of pipe that was fitted into your exhaust pipe. There were two butterfly plates with linkage that controlled them. Normally the plate in your exhaust was open and the one going to the whistle was closed. The exhaust went through the normal exhaust pipe. When you activated it, the plate in the exhaust pipe closed and the one going to the whistle opened. Then the exhaust was forced through the whistle. The whistle consisted of four seperate pipes of different lengths. Each had a slightly different tone and it was the combination of these tones that gave the whistle it's sound. I have seen some of these whistles that were subjected to too much pressure and they were blown apart.
