First be sure that the crankcase breather is clear and causing no backpressure in the crankcase. Their can be no up and down play in the crankshaft at the rear main bearing from journal wear.If their is the crank will have to be reground. If their is an indentation where the seal runs that is too deep a new seal will not seal properly. If the crankshaft has had the old rope worm type seal used in it that can cause a trough to form in the sealing surface of the crankshaft and it will be impossible to use the new rubber lip type seal at the rear main. If this is the case usually if the old rope worm seal is used it will work even with a pretty good trough rn into the crank. The worm seals ends should not be cut off and let to stay slightly above the metal surface of the block and main cap. The side slots surfaces should be clean where the side seals go between the block and the main cap. These ends of the side seals should protrode about a 1/6" above the surface of the block - main cap.
