This is great. My old lab would do something similar with our young half-Aussie. Anytime the lab would start barking, the puppy would follow and start barking too, even though she had no idea what they were barking at. After a while, when my old pup got tired of the puppy bothering her afternoon nap, she would just look up and let out a little "woof", and the young one would go running off into the distance. My old lab would then go back to sleep.
One day, my neighbor, about a mile away, saw our dogs walking down the road past his farm. Our dogs lived outside, but they rarely left the farm on their own, and very they rarely tried to cross the highway between our farms. He watched as my old dog looked around, started barking, and took off into the distance. The moment the pup passed the lab, barking into said distance, the old lab quickly turned around, hid in the ditch, and slunk back to our farm. The neighbor said he go the biggest laugh watching the puppy look around after a minute, really confused as to what happened. It almost worked, too, as she wouldn't leave the neighbors farm, and had to be dropped back off at ours.
It still cracks me up that the crotchety old dog actually tried to get rid of the puppy by abandoning her at another farm.
