I just went through something like this last month. I assemble my own computers from new parts and have a Linux based computer that I was converting to Windows-10 Pro because I thought there was an intermittent bug in the Linux OS. I loaded up a COA copy of 10 Pro and started to do all the normal updates as you should. The computer after an hour started to slow down as it did with Linux. (Not every time, but enough in a couple of months to drive you nuts.) Then windows 10 Pro error'ed out and did not finish a major Microsoft upgrade. Something was not right. Not a heat problem. I only use silver based heat sink compound and my computer case is well ventilated with the CPU never getting hotter than 110 degrees F. Power supply?,nope not hot and swapping it out with another did not help. GPU board?, not that either. A spare board did the same thing after a few hours of processing videos. Not a Hard drive I swapped those out as well. Not the mother board. Seldom do they fails during normal use and care. That left the memory sticks. I did the several hour grueling memory test of my 16 GB of non-ECC memory and darned if one stick would fail after an hour or so! The quick test always passes. I replaced the bad stick of memory with the same maker/type and all is working 100% again. All updates load very quickly as well as some very large and high quality videos I do. The memory stick was a very slow and not obvious failure causing lots of grief over the last couple of months. Everything worked,and worked well and then like melting ice cream, things would just start to bog down with the windows spinning wheel or an error saying the system was busy, please wait, and towards the end, just lock up with no mouse/key board functions working. Had I'd been patient and done the long test, I would have found the problem a couple of moths ago. Now I will always do the long test.
