I read that California was going to pass legislation that limited house hold water usage to 55 gallons of water per person per day. They wanted to put some teeth into it with some hefty fines but then realized it would be nearly impossible to enforce so they backed off and just made it advisory. I suspect it's coming though. California has always been on the forefront of environmental legislation. At first I wanted to sneer at California as I thought 55 gallons was a rather paltry amount so I did a little internet searching and figuring and did a personal "water audit". Here are some numbers for you. Lets say you wash your hands 4 times per day. At our house it takes most of a minute to get the water hot enough to wash them. At 1 gpm from a typical faucet that's at least 5 gallons per day. Flush the toilet what - 5 times per day? That's a tough one to figure since toilets vary anywhere from 1.6 gpf to 4 gpf if you have a real old one. We have one of each so I'll average it out at 2.5 gpf X 5 flushes = 12.5 gallons. Showers? Federal statistics say the average shower uses 17 gallons. I shower about 5 times per week. Every day in the summer. So I'm going to average it out to 14 gallons per day. I do my own laundry, about 3 loads per week with a top loader. Wife does her own plus towels, sheets, etc. That's about 100 gallons per week for each of us according to an internet search. So I need another 14 gals per day for clean clothes. They say a front load washer uses quite a bit less than a top loader by the way. Might pay to look into one when this one goes kaput. Normally just the two of us here so we run the dishwasher about twice a week at 6 gals per load. So I'll round up to 2 gals per day for that = a gallon per person per day. Then there's all the incidental stuff like cleaning extra pots and pans, the stove and counter tops, etc, extra scouring hands after working on a tractor, mop the kitchen floor once a week, clean the bathrooms weekly, drinking water, brushing teeth, making coffee, cooking, watering our indoor plants, and water for pets if you have them. That's a hard one to figure so I'm going to swag it and say another 6 gals per day. So as close as I can figure I use about 53.5 gallons per day. Whew! We could just make it. We're on city water here so if they delivered 2 55 gal drums of water each day I think we could get by here. Two barrels does seem like a lot though doesn't it? I don't know what we'd do if company came for a few days or we had Thanksgiving dinner here. Maybe order take out and use paper plates? Order a couple more barrels? Hand out deodorant to our guests? I'd have to collect rain water to pressure wash a tractor, clean the car and water the flowers and tomatoes though. I doubt that here in the land of 10,000 lakes and 50,000 swamps, ponds and rivers they would ever pass a law like that but some of you folks in dry country could get laws like that in the forseeable future. I think you could get by. Barely. Just some late night musing here. Hope you don't mind. I did mention tractors a couple of times just to make it legal. I would hope I'd have enough extra water to fill the radiators on mine. Jerry
