I was about 7 or 8 when we got a color TV. No telling what dad paid for that thing, color TV broadcast was just coming on the market. I remember the picture tube was round on the sides, flat on top and bottom. It was a major piece of furniture, about 6 feet wide, big speaker grills on each side with a 4" speaker hidden behind each one!

It was constant trouble, always something wrong with it. Had a bank of orange glowing tubes, took it a couple minutes to come on and start working. You could smell the tubes heating up.

That was when the repairman came to the house. Of course I was right there watching his every move, asking what did what. I remember one telling me not be adjusting the color pots (like he was doing with a mirror). "OK, I promise I won't!" Yeah, right...

About once a month I would have the back off, spraying the tuner with contact cleaner.

There was a fine tuning knob on front that had to be adjusted every time the channel was changed. It got so loose it had to be constantly thumped or pulled out and released. I had a string tied to it so I could thump it without getting up! LOL
