Throwing out a problem to see if bright minds out there can suggest something. My JD 2240 which has close to 10,000 hours on it has gotten tired this year--needs 2nd high to go up a hill I could scramble up in 4H, some black smoke under load. History of repairs includes the following- motor rebuild with rings, pistons etc 2500 hours ago, head gasket, rebuilt injector pump 2000 hours ago, clutch & throwout bearing last year plus miscellaneous starter, alternator, 4 wd solenoid rebuilds or replacement. My long time mechanic tested compression all good (and starts well even cold) tested injectors and replaced, adjusted valves, replaced air and fuel filters. Net result: no more smoke, a smidge more power but he & I and son agree that the improvement is marginal at best. He offered that the injector pump might be underperforming, but minor adjustments in timing didn't help and he said that he couldn't recommend rebuilding again unless I happened to have too much money lying around.
so any other ideas? and does anyone know of a place that will test an injector pump and tell you if rebuilding would be of any use?
Bottom line, I can use the tractor since it is mostly for loader work and the lighter parts of haying, but it would be nice to know if there is anything else to do.

You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o
