Yeah, That's right. A few years ago I was doing some work with gear sets and it wasn't entirely obvious to me that the idler didn't count in calculating the ratio. But after doing some visualizing and calculating,both with and without the idler in the set, it became clear, and I didn't have to take someone else's word for it. As for gear ratios, for a quick memory jog, I use the familiar auto rear end, its ring and pinion gears and how their sizes affect the ratio. And use that as a guide in calculating a ratio and what that ratio means.
