Here is a way we worked roads for heavy trucks hauling 20-40 tons each. We used mostly motor graders, but it could be done with a tractor& blade, the main thing that causes problems with a tractor/blade combo, is that the blade is behind, or ahead of the wheels and the movement up or down is exaggerated, where as with a center mounted blade such as a motor grader, it is smoothed out and the longer the wheelbase, the slower the blade moves up or down with a bump or holes in the road. To really get rid of the washboard condition, you need to use the rippers on your box blade, on it,then set your blade at an angle, to roll it out to the edge, then come back the opposite way with the blade set deeper on the out side edge, to give it some sort of a ditch to take the water runoff and make a crown in the center of the road. This is best done when the dirt is slightly moist, and will pack as you work it. The finish work or crowning is best done in several passes, as this helps to pack it, the final pass should be with the blade set straight, and running in the center of the road, to slightly flatten the center pile you made while you were crowning it. It helps also if you can pack it when finished before it gets rained on. Gene Davis
