MH30 Engine help

Posted by Tom S. on January 06, 2002 at 19:15:43 from (4.46.81.101):

I have a 1949 MH 30 GR with a Continental MFB162GG engine. I bought it at an estate sale and probably paid $150 too much for it. (I paid $150) Its pretty beat and was stuck, both the engine and the rear wheels. Got the rear wheels freed and got her home and have the engine apart.
The No. 4 piston and some valves were the problem. The cylinder walls, valves and the crank look good as far as I can tell. The Conn. rod bearing caps have been shimmed so someone must have done some work before.
The pistons are the questionable part. The no. 4 is different from the rest. It is stamped on the top with a big T in a square. To the left of the T is a 6 and to the right is a 1 or L. This piston has three solid rings and one oil type ring. I broke the top ring getting it out of the groove.
The No. 1, 2, and 3 pistons are Comformatic and have no. 1001. These have two solid rings and two oil rings. The top rings are pretty sloppy. I was able to get a .019 feeler gauge in the groove next to them in some spots. Some top rings have visible wear.
The rist pins all feel good but they do turn in the No. 1, 2, and 3 pistons. In the No. 4 the rist pin was tight in the piston bores.
All four pistons have .030 stamped on top.
My questions are:
1. Which piston(s) were the original.
2. What does the .030 on the piston tops mean.
3. Can I get by re-using the rings and just replace the one I broke. This tractor will only be used for fun and parades - no work for this beast anymore.
4. I have an old RED SEAL stationary unit with a Continental 162 engine. Will those pistons work in this engine?
Thanks for any help/advice you can offer.

Today's Featured Article - History of the Nuffield Tractor - by Anthony West. The Nuffield tractor story started in early 1945. The British government still reeling from the effects of the war on the economy, approached the Nuffield organization to see if they would design and build an "ALL NEW" British built wheeled tractor, suitable for both British and world farming. ...
