I'd never driven anything bigger than my Cub, but when we moved to Illinois, I needed something bigger and got a Ford 4000. I found a 6' Befco mower deck for it and thought I was set up. The very first time using the new setup, I was cruising in 3rd gear along a small ditch in front of the house and went to turn up on the road.
Never having used a rear-mounted mower before, I picked the Befco up about 2' off the turf and went to turn upslope onto the road. I stuck in the clutch to shift down and hit the brakes, which I soon found were almost totally ineffective.
I soon found myself rolling backwards into a ravine. I let out the clutch, still in 3rd gear with throttle well open, and popped a wheelie just as my wife came out of the house to announce dinner. I slammed the clutch back in, the front dropped, but I resumed the backward roll into the ravine. Let the clutch out again and popped yet another wheelie as she screamed bloody murder.
Finally had sense enough to slam the mower deck down, got it into 1st and climbed out onto the road.
After I got the Mrs. calmed down, I went to resume mowing and the gearbox head of the Befco promptly spun off the deck--the stress of serving as wheelie bar had cracked the housing. Replacing it took 6 weeks and $900, but I'll take that over a back flip into a ravine. Worst part of it now is having her hold it over my head.
