I have had this experience with an intruder and a John deere JDX 4, and it sounds to me like their is a pinhole in your fuel line somewhere and you are losing your prime. If you don't already have a primer mounted in your dash they are more than worth their weight.(they sell for about $20 can) If your tub under your carbs is wet this is a good sign to a small fuel leak. The fuel may not leak when the machine is running but will let air in when parked. Another possibility is a weak fuel pump, not recovering the fuel to the carbs when you are pulling on the rope but with the engine running and the vaccuum up it works fine. Makuni pump kits are available and are relatively simple to change.
