Positive gound systems

I own an Allis Chalmers D-10, manufactured in 1963. When I purchased the tractor the battery was connected(negative post to ground) and the tractor runs fine. I began to question whether or not the generator was charging and discovered, during research of the electrical system, that the manual calls for the tractor to be hooked up as a positive ground system. I plan to have the generator rebuilt and am not sure if something has been changed on the tractor. I have traced all the wiring per the owners manual diagram from the switches to the generator and voltage regulator. All the wiring is as shown in the manual with the exception of the yellow wire from the ignition side of the starting/ignition switch to the coil. The manual shows this wire to the negative side of the coil. This wire is on the positive side of the coil. Is it possible this change was made so the tractor could be set-up with a negative ground? Does it make a difference? When I rebuild the genrator can I just polarize it for a negative ground and everything will work fine. Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
