Don't forget; tractors, especially the older ones weren't designed to skid logs -- log skidders were. I believe many tractor fatalities per annum are caused by folks using tractors to skid logs. Generally, I think one of the advantages of modern tractors over the older machines is that the newer tractors incorporate safety devices into the design. Although certainly nothing makes up for unintelligent operation. (Auto collisions are actually higher in vehicles with airbags.) Anyway, if you plan to log, maybe you could buy a nice little used tractor for all the other tasks, and then get a log skidder too!

Also, do you have room to store the machine inside. I can fit my 135 into some spare space in my garage, but a bigger machine I'd need another building/shelter of some sort.

Are you going to plow or blow snow? (There's lots of discussion about this topic in the archives.) Do you want a cab?

Four wheel drive would allow you to get away with a little less horsepower I think, for similar tasks. But a two wheel drive machine should be ample, depending on what your treed areas are like.

Depending on what dealers/services I was close too, I'd be looking at Massey Ferguson, Kubota, John Deere, Case, something like that.

For someone who doesn't know an awfully lot about tractors, an honest, reliable, local dealer makes sense. You may be able to get them to warrant certain things.

I sort of disagree with some of the other posts when it comes to money. For a decent tractor with a loader (I think a loader is pretty much mandatory as far as "other suggestions" go) budget $10,000 (Canadian). Unless you want a "project" -- then you could spend less initially, and catch up later by spending time and money fixing up your machine. I think the "deals" get better the further north you go in the farming part of Ontario, and there are some good deals out west (Sask, Manitoba ).
