Dad had a '70 Duster with 198 slant 6, and a '67 D100 pickup with 225 slant 6. Both with 3 on the tree. Dad and I competed for gas mileage between his Duster and my '70 Nova with 307 V8 & 3-speed manual. I always got within 2-3 mpg of his Duster but my Nova's performance was WAY better. The sheetmetal on his Duster did dissolve faster than my Nova's sheet metal did. Duster had a bigger trunk too. Comparing the D100 to the '67 F250 Camper Special pickup with 352 V8 and FMX trans Dad had in '70 to '72 was like comparing a push scooter to a high performance Ducati motorcycle.
The slant 6's would have been fine in small farm equipment. The Chevy 292 and Ford 300-6 was used in lots of non-automotive applications.
