Just to add a little more explaination.-- The exhaust valves are opened by little hyd cylinders using engine oil that comes from the rocker shaft supply. When you have it switched on the electromagnetic switches close and trap the engine oil into a system similiar to a hyd.brake system. Each cyl. has a little hyd.cyl that is being pushed up by a rocker arm that in turn pushes a slave cyl down and opens the exhaust valve on the cyl. next to it under the same valve cover . In the truck there is a second selector switch which lets you pick 2,4,or 6 cyl on a cummins engine or 3 or six cyl on a cat engine so you can use the Jake even when your empty. Also the term Jake is slang for Jacobs and when you read a Cat manual they are very specific about the parts that are Jacobs. The other interesting thing that happens when the Jake is on is that because of the compressed air going out the exhaust the turbo speeds up and start pumping more air in and makes if even more effective. The turbo pressure will build up to over half of full hp. pressure and the engine isn't even firing.
