Theres more, I graduateed in 78,goofed around till I got into Tool & Die school, got out in Jan of 82 and the only jobs were outa state, Joined Unca Sammys Army as a machinest and saw Texas and Korea for 3 years. Figgered by the time I got out things would have turned around but 85 in Iowa was still bad, worked 3 years for the family farm for food and gas money, still think We woulda gone under if I was paid what I am now. Made friends only to see them sell out and move away, Dad almost got an ulcer and slept lously for years . What I remember wasn't the farmers sellin out but the banks folding and the small town populations dropin by 1/3. Many things set up these hard times but Carters grain embargo smashed it over the edge, so ya can put some blame on him for IH failing. To bad they couldn't get a bail out deal like Mopar or Harley. Both sisters fled the state and now live on the belt way. No houses were built for 8 years, since then we have had 4 good years and this ain't gonna be one of the with the low grain prices, Deere has flooded the market with combines so the resale is not what guys expect, frankly we could be headed for another run of tough years for the owner operator farmer. Proablem is Agriculture can be in a rescesion and the rest of the country doesn't give a shutt any more.
