: : My Ford 801 is running too rich fuel mixture. The exhuast is a bit on the black side and so are the plugs. The carb is a Marvel Schesler. I see two adjustments on it, one up on top of carb and the other on bottom of fuel bowl. Both are set at about 1 1/2 turns from seat.I've tried adjusting several turns, but it still runs rich. Should I go to a smaller jet or can something else be done to lean out?

: I agree with Gerald about checking your float and needle valve/seat. Also, you may find that, due to wear or damage, you will get your best idle with the idle mixture screw almost all the way in (say 1/4 to 1/2 turn open). My Ford 800 idles best at 1/4 turn open.

You can use the governor as an indicator of carburetor setting, otherwise it gets in the way. To set the idle jet, run the engine just fast enough that the throttle plate is not against the idle speed adjustment screw, or back that screw out. Then adjust the idle mixture. The governor will close the throttle as you get the best mixture. Its the same for the high speed jet, except it ought to be under more load than just running fast, though running fast is a start. Again adjust the mixture for minimum throttle opening. The governor makes a fairly sensitive indicator of mixture that way. Then you probably have to richen the mixture a tad so that when you rapidly open the hand throttle from idle to fast, that the engine doesn't die. I've adjusted my MF-135 for maximum speed pulling a plow, when loading the engine off the governor, but that ends up a little on the rich side.
