My Dad fixed a guys car one time in a way that is just plain amazing. The guy lost a rod bearing on an old desoto (this was back in the late 50s the car I think was from the late 30s or forties)on the north side of Indianapolis and limped it in to Dads shop. the guy didn't have any money exept what he needed for gas to get to St Louis MO. Dad lent him the tools to get the oil pan off and then Dad crawled under and took off the rod cap. He then cut a leather tounge out of an old shoe to fit the bearing, punched in an oil hole, polished the crank with fine grit crocus cloth, and put it together. the guy put the oil pan back on and dumped his old oil back in after straining it good. About a week later Dad got a letter from the guy saying he made it ok, the car was still running ok, and said thank you for the help. I always got a kick out of hearing Dad tell the story. I also keep thinking about the poor slob who bought a Desoto and found a leather rod bearing sometime down the road!
