I built my house in North Bend and learned a LOT.

There are many concerns to design that I've learned from others and some I learned by "wishing I'd done that." Here's a few:

* Cover your soffets and install outlets at the corners for Christmas lights. Covered soffets offer a cleaner finish, are easier to paint and add a lot of insultation value.

* Plan & install security lighting. One of the greatest features of our house was a central lighting pannel in the hallway outside the bedrooms that turned on hallogen lights under the peaks of the roof and off the ends of the decks. Those lights illuminated the entire perimeter of the house and not only gave peace of mind when something went "bump" outside but also made snowstorms and unbelievable sight. Cheap too.

* Two story houses are a pain to paint. Think about wrap-around decks. My current house has these and repainting will be a snap.

* Central Vaccuum. They're great and have features you won't believe like a little trap door "dust pan." They aren't real expensive and they add a lot of value.

* Intercom. Never knew how nice they could be until we had one.

* Thermostat controlled faucet on the tub. No more tubs full of cool water because the washer took most of the hot water.

* If you're out in the country and plan to heat with wood, look at outside fired furnaces. They keep all the dirt and debris outside and you only have to stoke a fire once every day or so in the coldest weather. (Every three days out here in the mild Northwest.)

* I'll never install a hose bib through an exterior wall of my house again. Hydrants are much better, install where you want them, never freeze and can be replaced without tearing your house apart.

* Don't forget accent lighting for you landscape, walks and the outside walls of your house. I built lighting with a sensor that kept walk lights low until someone walked near. Really was a big hit.

Today's Featured Article - Tractor Hydraulics - The Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. Hydraulics was one of the greatest inventions for helping man compound the work he can do. It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul ...
