Heres the facts that I know.... Lots of people think of an inline six as automatically being a torque monster as if six in a row is some magical configuration. The reason inline six engines can produce so much torque is because there is plenty of room to have a crankshaft with a large throw that will provide a long torque producing stroke. as with the case of the cummins vs. powerstroke the powerstrokes pistons are set 90 degrees apart from each other which provides all of the room needed for a hefty, long stroke crankshaft so the advantage of the inline configuration is negated here. plus the powerstroke is smoother in operation due to the load being spread over two extra pistons. Also not that it really matters much but a V8 engine is inherrantly more rigid than an inline six due to the short wide stance of the block. The 6 is more prone to torsional block twist under loads.
I do believe that the cummins has a larger main bearing and bottom end assembly than the powerstroke but iv not measured them. I wouldnt worry about that much because its not too often that you blow the bottom end out of your diesel anyway. No matter which one you choose your getting a good engine so I would compare the payload ratings for the years that I was interested in and go for whichever had the highest.
by the way heres the specs for 2002 year model heavy duty trucks...

Dodge 4,200 11,000
Ford 4,900 10,000

yes I know we arent comparing chevys in this post but since chevy/GMC had the highest rating i thought it deserved to be listed.
I know that was an extremely long post. I should be off studying for my geography exam. But since im putting myself through college by being a diesel/heavy equipment mechanic i really get into this stuff. Good luck with your future truck purchase.... I dont think you can go wrong no matter which one you get.
