if you take a good running tractor and put the timing out by moving the dist you will still have spark at the plugs when you check for spark there. There fore timing should not be your main problem. although it may also be out of time. My first guess is a problem like the other suggestions of rotor or cap being worn. If that is the case I would suspect that the dist is worn inside where the shaft rotates inside the bushing supports. that would allow the rotar to reach out as it wobbles around in there and mess up a new rotar and or cap quickly. also with ignition on did you open points to see them fire with the cap off. they are apparently firing because you saw fire at the coil wire, but it is still nice to see it working.
