What I find sad and funny at the same time is that the people pushing for universal back ground checks have no idea what the back ground check does and how useless the info actually is. All the back ground check does is allow or disallow the ABILITY to purchase. It does not record if the purchase actually happened. Purchase records are maintained at the retailer until such time that the retailer ceases firearm sales, then the records are transferred to the ATF, where they sit in a Raiders of the Lost Ark type wharehouse. The ATF does not have the resources or staff to compile the info they have now. I found this info out from my town marshall, he found out first hand how useless all this is. We have a local Ernest T. Bass type that likes to tell people he is going to shoot them. Well, he spooked some residents, so the Marshall contacted the ATF to see if he had ever purchased any firearms. The ATF told him they had no way of knowing, especially if they were purchased pre-electronic days. He has no family to ask, so even a red flag law is useless. Marshall and I know he is likely harmless, but the marshall keeps an eye on him.
