I believe that most, MOST of the cheaper oils are just as good as the expensive junk. I used Wal-Mart 2 cycle oil in my snowmobile one winter and ended up rebuilding the engine because of it. Now maybe I should have set the jets a little richer, but it was working fine with Yamaha oil so I didn't think anything should be changed.

I used to use Amoco Ultimate Gold 5w-30 in my car and it used 1 quart every 1000 miles. I switched to Phillips TropArtic 5w-30 and it used oil the first time, but since the second time it hasn't used a drop in 2500 miles. Also, I watch the dipstick for changing oil, not the odometer or hour meter - when the oil starts to get darker it is breaking down so I change it. Sometimes 3000 miless, sometimes 2000 miles. Sometimes 100 hours, sometimes as little as 50 hours in the winter.

Synthetics are best, but not good for break-in period. If I could afford it I would use synthetic, but still change every 3000 or so miles. Detergent oils are fine in antique tractors, it's all I use and they seem to run fine, even after 10 years!! Just be sure to change the filter every time you change the oil, and be consistent with your oil, switching brands causes oil consumption.

Merely my opinion after 10 years of experience with cars and farm equipment.
