Lots of comments already posted on this subject, so I may as well add mine.....

We've got a locally owned and managed Goodyear dealer that has expanded to a chain of four from the original one. Three of those are in communities with Wal-Marts and other discount tire stores. That wouldn't have been possible if he wasn't doing quality work at a fair price. I've bought stuff there for over 30 years, and they've NEVER sold me junk, ALWAYS stood behind their work, and I don't think they've ever deliberately sold me something my vehicle didn't need. Small businesses run well can succeed in this country, even if they sometimes charge a little more for the product.

Along the same lines....I've dealt with a major Chevrolet dealer on the North side of Indy that some swear by, and some swear at. My experiences with their service department since 1985 have ALL been positive. They aren't cheap, but they do the work promptly (under warranty or not) and they do it well. Only one time in those 16 years with 6 different vehicles have they failed to find the problem on the first attempt and fix it right. In that one instance, the noise was gone after they worked on it, and came back the next day. They then fixed the problem for no charge, and that work would have cost more than what I'd paid for the previous day. One time I took a car in for what I thought would be some MAJOR work. About 20 minutes later, the service rep came in and said "I'm going to make your day! The part you need is gonna cost you less than $20, and We'll have you out of here in a half hour!" Another time, I took a car in for an oil change, and the mechanic came to the waiting room and said "You need to see this...." Inspection had shown some problems that weren't far away. They were very up-front about it, and said "If you're going to keep this thing for more than another few months, you'd probably better have this fixed."

This is a BIG dealership, and part of the reason they are big is because their service department WORKS at treating people right.

I hear horror stories from co-workers about the way they are treated at some places. I've found two that treat me right, and I'm going to continue to buy there!

The saga starts with the following message: Hey guys I have a decision to make. I know what you all will probably suggest and it will probably agree with me way down inside, but here it is. I have a picture blown up and framed in my "tractor room" of a Farmall M. It was my Grandpa's tractor, of which whom I never got to meet. He froze to death getting this tractor out of the barn to pull a truck out of the ditch before I was born. Anyway my dad and aunt had to sell it at the auction, ... [Read Article]
