That boom section is ductile Iron and while it can be welded it wont hold for long as soon as it is heated it becomes extremely brittle and suceptable to fracture Which I have witnessed several times.My local case dealer has a large pile of these in the back waiting for scrap prices to go up. We broke one of these booms on our 580 K when one of our operators hit a large tree with the extenda hoe all the way out while back filling a perk test at a potential home site.Ironically when we sold it 6 year older 580 E's were worth a lot more and we still have 5 of them we have a new super L and hate it we cant get 8 hours out of it on a full tank of fuel, at the same time we bought a new Cat 416 and are thrilled with it but its a lot more expensive, we are thinking of trying a new Komatsu on demo but they keep getting sold to the people that demo them and they cant replace them fast enough.T.J.
