Fargo, Along the lines of Dean’s comments is the effect of trailer weight rating on the required class of Drivers License. In my state a class D commercial license has the weight limit of 26,000 pounds for the vehicle (truck) and 10,000 pounds for the trailer. The GVWR for a trailer is usually based on the axle rating. As we always hear mentioned most states have some exemptions for hauling farm products (your own). You may not be covered under these exemptions if you are hauling for hire and have an accident. Others have mentioned that the farm exemptions may not apply to the Interstate highways. It is tough if one person does something stupid to cause an accident then their lawyer proves the other driver’s license or equipment did not meet the legal requirements. I have kind of jumped past your initial question. If your truck has a dump bed, and 4-wheel drive you have eaten well into the GVWR of the truck when you are empty. Legally a ¾ ton truck with a 1200-pound trailer might have more load capacity. You mentioned having low range in your transfer case. This is good when pulling out of a tough spot or for backing into a tight spot, but not for road use. Most all transfer cases require you to completely stop to change from low to high range. If you do not have manual front hubs you will not want to use 4-low on dry pavement. If you have a Dodge with the “RamTrac” vacuum engagement on the front axle, there is a kit to allow you to use 4-low without engaging the front differential. We all love big trucks and big trailers, but times have changed.
