The WW 2 museum. Ride the street car down St Charles. Try some king cake. And have some coffee and beignets at Café Du Monde Some pralines would be nice also. Seeing Jackson square and taking a buggy ride tour from the square is nice also.
Even though I would never go I think it is a must to visit the quarter just so you can say you been there. But like stated while you are safe there do not venture off the beaten path.
Brennan's and Commander's palace and others do have very good food but you will pay for it. For me I would rather eat where the locals eat. There is one local place. 10 miles from the closest stop sign out in the middle of no where. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday and if you do not go early other days you will wait in line. Middendorf's seafood restaurant. On a map it is listed in Akers, LA but the sign on the interstate 55 will say Manchac.
