Although I lost faith in Dodge and Ford's, I have had experience with all of the "Big Three", good bad and otherwise. I persaonaly will try to stay with GM/Chey/Saturn vehicles, I owned a 75 plymouth valiant which had a slant six engine (225 cubic inch) which the engine outlasted the car, my buddy had a 1970 Dodge P/u with the same engine, only problem was that he taught at least a dozen kids to drive standard on the old "three in the tree transmission" and had to replace the clutch about a half dozen times accordingly.
I purchased my first new truck in 1990 which was a 1991 Chevy S-10 with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine. I had trouble with it from day 1 and had equal number of problems with the dealership in Southern Livingston Conty, New York. The name of the Dealership is: W_n_w_r_t_. I am not slandering them specificaly though because I've known other people who can't say enough good about them. I now own a 1995 Chevy C-1500 with a 4.3 V6 backed up to an electronic OD tranny. Except that it ate the integrated engine oil cooler lines (after rubbing up against a stud)I've not had problems with it (120K). Friday I purchased a 1999 Saturn SL 4 dr. economy car with 36k miles. I drive about 140 miles a day between my home and work and need to have something to not pour gas into all the time, with luck and a few prayers I will not have problems and still get 40 MPG.
Prevoise to the Ford my dad had a 1978 Dodge D-300 with a 360 V8, it ate transmissions right and left. Finally dropped an oil pump and spun a bearing--end of truck.

No matter what you get, Good luck to you.
My Father has a 1995 Ford Dually with a 7.3 liter diesel backed with an electronic overdrive transmisson. He tows a large 5th wheel King of the road camper (nice!!!). He went to PA. and blew the guts out of the transmission even after breaking it in. Turned out there wasn't an auxillary transmission cooler on the truck (now there is!!) and he also had the tranny replaced.
