Kermit, I own a 1997 1500 extended cab 4x4 with the Sport package. It now has around 62,000 miles. To date, I have had no problems with this truck. I run the 318 with 3.55 gears. I consistently run 17-18 mpg, which I feel is pretty go for a full size truck. I know Chevy and Ford owners who have had tranny problems, so it isnt just a Dodge thing. One of my close friends has a 1997 Chevy 4x4. He has shucked two trannies in the first 106,000 miles, and he also went through three fuel pumps. Chevy or Ford or Dodge, there are always going to be lemons that come from the factory. Which ever make you decide on, just make sure you don't tow in OD, thats how the trannies on all makes seem to break. Also, I went to a small town dealership. They seem to have better service, and where I live, the small town dealership has a $40.00 an hour shop rate versus the $88.00 rate at the big city dealership, and they were always real snotty.
