I had a 94 Dodge 1500 4X4 that I bought brand new and put 60,000 miles on before I sold it, never had any problems with it, I now own a 93 Dodge W250 4X4 with the Cummins that I bought with 60,000 miles on it and it now has 172,000 miles on it and I haven't had any real problems with that. Now on the other side of things we had a 95 Dodge 2500 4X4 with the V8 at work and we munched the transmission at 15,000 - 20,000 miles, the local Dodge dealer that was always real honest and reputable told me that most of the trucks with transmission problems had a plow hung on them from day one and that if a truck got well broken in first and had 25,000-30,000 miles on it and then a plow hung on it that they didn't see the same problems. Sounds weird to me but I believe these guys. Then there was a guy I heard about that had a 94 Dodge 1500 4X4 that towed a d4 cat around with it and put 160,000 miles on his truck in 3 years before the engine needed to be rebuilt but the transmission was still going strong. As far as some people saying Dodges have weak transmissions stay away from them, every full size truck manufacturer has had problems with transmissions, Ford, Dodge and Chevy and I don't believe anyone is worse than the other. The work truck we have now is a Ford F-350 with the V-10 and automatic, it has 7,900 miles on it and is on it's third transmission. If it was my truck that would make me mad, and I've heard of many other Fords having transmission problems but I would still consider one when its time to purchase. It's just one of those things that happens I even know of Chevys that have had transmission problems. In then end I would say buy what you like and hopefully you won't get a truck built on a monday or friday, I believe that the big three are very equal in quality and it comes down to what features you like about one over the other. One last note, the Dodge 5.2 and 5.9 engines are old block designs that have been around for quite a while and are well proven, that makes me feel comfortable when I shell out over $25,000 for a new truck.
