JD 420 is a nice little tractor, but get one with live PTO (5 speed transmission models are live, 4 speed are not). If you're getting a loader, power steering is also a virtual necessity. IH 300 and 350 are in the price and size range, but don't seem to have a big following- may be reliability problems with the torque amplifier?? Oliver Super 55 and 550 are just about ideal- same size and maneuverability as 8N, but with independent PTO, live hydraulics, live 3 point, and possibility of power steering (but hard to find). AC D-14 to D-17 are good tractors as well- but you need 3 point, and many are "snap coupler"- but you can convert for about $500. MF 35 and 135 would also fill the bill. Case 430 and 530 seemed like they would be better tractors than they turned out to be. Ditto the Leylands, Nuffields and other European foreigners.

There are some good buys out there among the newer tractors (1975 and later) as well, especially at consignment auctions. I got an IH 574 diesel at auction recently for $2,200, and have only had to fix minor things. But you've got to be able to fix them, unless you get lucky! And speaking of that, good luck to you!
