Newbie Tractor Question - which one???

Posted by Dan on August 25, 2001 at 04:32:39 from (208.11.16.90):

Here is our situation. We live in Western Virginia on 8 acres. The lawn area is about an acre. There is a garden and orchard and barn that is on about another 1 1/2 acre. The rest is pasture. Most of the pasture is quite hilly and I am not sure it is safe to run a tractor up there. We just moved here and the pasture is overgrown something fierce. There are some brambles and the grass and weeds are over my head. I would like to bush hog those areas and lime and disc and seed with better pasture grasses. Hay the bottom section and just use the hilly top section for pasture for a couple head of cattle. We also live up a hill and about 1/4 mile off paved roads and will need some type of scraper for snow removal to get out when the weather is bad.

We went today to see 2 tractors that are in our price range. One was a Ford 2000 and the other an International Harvester 424 - both are in the neighborhood of $4,500 (from a dealer). Does anyone know about these and if so, which is the one to go with. I would suspect that parts are easier to get for the Ford, but which is the better? I think both are in the 1960's age. This is our first tractor and know NOTHING. Our first info has come from this site. Living in a VERY small community, our choices are limited. Also, they will deliver either one for free which we have had no luck from individuals selling tractors (it is scarce to see them selling any even) - they won't deliver even if you pay them! We have no way to get it home and way too far to drive it if purchased outside our community. We can't find a one in our town.

Other than a bush hog, spreader, disc, and hay making attachments, and some type of snow blade, is there anything else we need.

Please excuse our ignorance. We have NO idea what we are doing! Thanks and we sure do appreciate any input!
