Rules must be very different in different states.

'Here' you must have a visable SMV sign. The implement doesn't have to have one if it doesn't block the tractor's SMV sign.

Only time an escort vehicle is needed is if your implement is over 18 feet wide or goes into the other lane of traffic.

Of course, the less you draw attention to yourself, the less problems. So, adding the extra SMV signs is a big plus. And proper lighting at night is needed. And so on. 'Here' in an agricultural community have the SMV sign in place, and you are pretty well good to go.

Oh, there is a 2 hitchpin rule, (can't pull 3 wagons or whatever) and you need to secure the pins with a clip OR use a safety chain.

But then, with all these rules & regulations, have we ever gotten a straight answer? I was curious about transporting a hand scanner (listens to ham radio signals, illegal to have in the car because you could listen to the police 'here' in MN). Talked to the DMV, local police, and state police, and got 3 different answers. Read the rules in the State Book of laws, and seemed there were details no one mentioned....

Was at Farmfest & the State folks were trying to explain the rules of the road of farm equipment at a booth there. Sounded fine, until people were asking specific questions, and then it all kinda fell apart - we got 2 different answers from the three people running the booth, plus a lot of confused looks.

We've had a lot of discussion here in the past on what the DOT wants from farm trailer on the highways. Here in Minnesota non-interstate roads allow pretty much anything to be pulled safely & with enough lighting as long as the farmer is pulling his own produce or farm supplies - trailer doesn't need a licence. But, people will disagree & say the DOT is national & applies to everything. Who's right? All the gross vehicle discussions, how the DOT will fine anyone over 6000 lbs. In fall I can count dozens of pickups with 300 bu wagons going past the place every day, no extra brakes, no lights. That's getting near 25,000 lbs gross. Never heard of anyone getting pulled over in 20 years.

So, what are the rules? Try not to be obviously wrong, have a real sweet attitude if you get pulled over, and hope for the best. All the rest seems to be left up to interpitation....
