It depends. If you want to back up an entire image of the hard drive, you may need the same space on the tape (some tape drives do compression, saving tape space). Depending on the system, this may be one or more physical tapes. This gets you back in business the fastest, but costs $$$ for the tape drive and software. If you want to back up only your important files, everything in "MyDocuments" for example, then you may be able to do so to tape, CD, CD-R, diskette, etc. This is a logical alternative if you have the entire operating system on CD. You can always just re-install Windows, then recover your folders from the backup. But you also have to have all the drivers, especially for the CD drive, handy. A third alternative is to get a second hard drive and back up C to D. Then you have a very easy way to recover but you have to hope the hard drive controller doesn't go bad! And this doesn't provide for off-site storage. This may also not provide any protection from certain viruses. It does have the added advantage in that if you accidentally delete a file, or make updates to it you want to back out, you can just copy the existing file from D back to C and be right back where you started from.
