It's my understanding that tetra-ethyl lead was introduced for two reasons. First, was to increase the octane rating of the fuel and second was to protect the valve seats. The best solution is to install stellite valve seats in the engine. This will allow the use of unleaded fuel forever. I have had some extremely favorable results with additives, but those I have used are not commercially available. I personally, am not comfortable with most of the over the counter additives for either oil or fuel. This is not to say that they may not work as they claim. One last thing, if you aren't working the engine hard such as just going to shows with an occasional stint on the belt or whatever, you probably won't bother the engine at all using unleaded fuel with iron seats under the valves.
