Bought this 1988 tractor recently with only 900 verified hours. That's 30 years and 30 hours per year, most in the summer as it was used as a brush hogging driver. Fast forward: Have a vibration in the engine. Looked up Ford 3 cylinders and harmonic balancing (have none on the front of the crank like on a car/truck), and engines that are inherently balanced and all that stuff.

Went through all new fluids and all that, fuel is fresh, CAV pump with dual filters, incoming is clear plastic so you can see if any water is in the fuel....none. Cracked the injectors and made sure no air was trapped. Popped the valve cover and checked the valve gap....right on spec. Put the paper on the tailpipe and checked for suck and blow.....nothing but blow-blow so valves are seating properly,

Was helping somebody with an injector problem and got to thinking that I may have a partially plugged injector that is squirting rather than misting due to the age and little usage.

So I put in 4x the recommended amount of Power Services Snake Oil (the grey container) in half a tank of fuel and ran it for awhile and let it sit for several days to soak in. Today I got it out on the road for half an hour or so and ran the engine at max rpms (2150, book says 2200 is max for the CAV pump). Got it back home and runs really smooth for a 3 cyl, like my other 3 cyl diesel.

Once again SO has proven itself to me so I continue to invest my money in it......let's see, how much snake oil can I buy with what 3 new injectors would cost me? Wink!

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
