I bought 2 replacement BS V twins at 18 and 20 hp for that kind of money on ebay. Both seem to be leftovers from a production line; one has stickers, the other doesn't. Been about 2 years now and they work perfectly. Bolt pattern on today's mowers is setup on a 10" bolt circle allowing single cylinder and V twins to occupy the same mounting platform. Attachments for fuel and electric are in the same place on both types of engines.
Only difference is that if you are going from a single to a twin, you need to replace your throttle and choke cables. The single feeds on the left side and the V twin around in front requiring a longer cable.....ebay had that too listed for a JD L120 which carried the V twin. The 18 went into a JD L110 replacing a single 17.5 and the 20 went into a Husqvarna 46 replacing a Kohler Courage 20 hp single. Used the same ebay purchased throttle/choke cable for both. Mounted on the plastic side of the mower within easy reach with my left hand.
