: Gary, : You might be able to find a distributor off of a late model 8N which has the side distributor. If you do, you will have to move the generator to the left side and re-route the oil fill tube. : Ken McWilliams : Dayton, OH : *************************************************************************************** : : I have a 9n tractor which has been very serviceable except for the fact that if it sits for very long, the points corrode slightly and tractor refuses to start until they are cleaned. Question;Has any one developed a system to supplant the front distributor and coil with perhaps an electronic ignition? I`m not interested in a sinple 12 volt conversion. Then you'd need a new hole in the block to hold that distributor and a gear on the cam shaft to drive that distributor, easier to find a late 8N... The front mounted distributor had the advantage of no gears, and the disadvantage of being hard to get to. Ford used it beginning about 1932 on V-8s. The tractor engine was half a V-8 in a lot of concepts. It might be possible to adapt a magnetic pickup, such as used in the 80s vintage VW Rabbit to drive an ignition module, though that was an expensive distributor to replace. The magnetic pickup actually could be had from an electronics distributor for a few bucks. A VW ignition module would probably work fine at 6 volts, but would need negative ground. A positive ground ignition module could be made. Gerald
