I worked for the state highway dept. one summer, taking load tickets for asphalt being put down on new freeway interchanges. Truck comes, get the ticket, write what section of interchange its going on, put ticket in box, wait for next truck. Not what you'd call a real high-speed job, but it turned into a real yawner when they were doing the little radiuses, using a layton box on the back of the dump truck instead of the paver. One time the truck driver dumped too much asphalt, went all over the place. The crew started shoveling it back into the layton box, so I grabbed a shovel and started helping them. Just then my boss drove up- called me over to him, said "I know it gets boring out here, but you can't EVER help the construction contractor. Liability problems is you got hurt, but worse, if their union boss had seen that, he would have run in circles waving his arms and yelling Scab! Scab! and would have shut the job down. If you ever do that again, I'll have to fire you on the spot.
He left, I went back to the crew, and the foreman held out the shovel with a big smile. I smiled back, and politely declined. We both got a good laugh out of it.
And so began my education on the realities of life, and its only gotten worse in the 50 years since.
