: A husband and wife team are moving from San Francisco to farm country in Maine and are now responsible for mowing 6 acres and plowing over 150 feet of drive. : Looking for a tractor, mower, plow, and wagon. Do I need anything else. Any quality used equipment I should consider/avoid? HELP! How much do you want to spend? The bare minimum is $3-4 K for a 40-60 year old tractor with a couple of used implements. This is what I have and it is cheap, charming and less idiosyncratic than you might think, although still having its moments. If you walked intot he dealer and bought everything new, you're looking at $20 K. You obviously can spend any amount in between. An interesting point is very few people have lost a lot of money on the resale of tractors in the last 20 years. The darn things just don't depreciate that much,at least in non-inflation adjusted dollars. Therefore, most of your cost of ownership is what you could have invested the difference between a new and old tractor in, versus the depreciation (like a car). Of course, you being a city slicker, you'd understand allthis and already have plenty invested. By the way, when you get to Maine, bank with Fleet. They are the only sophisiticated bank there with internet banking, and the ATM and Branch network throughout New England, New York and New Jersey is a great convenience while road-tripping (this includes Boston and NYC)
