: The 9N/2N tractors use a cutout relay. The 8N has a regulator. Tractors with only the cutout relay can benefit from the 8v battery by just swapping the battery (the generator's third brush position may need adjustment). Tractors with a regulator would need the regulator adjusted. : : The higher voltage will increase the cranking speed. It will also improve the spark by increasing (by 1/3) the current through the coil -- the coil should be able to take this, if not, you'll end up replacing the coil and changing the ballast resistor. : : The higher voltage will dramatically decrease the life of any lights on the tractor. I have not done this to a tractor, but I have done it to a Model T Ford car. They have the 3rd bruch type of generator, and can be adjusted fairly easily (provided you have the little curved wrench made for it!). There is a company making electronic regulators for such generators, to - they are available in 6, 8, or 12 volts. They should also fit a lot of the tractor generators, but are a bit on the pricy side. (about $70.) World great, though! Bill
