funny domed piston? More of 'dome' to side away from valvles? High compression for the side valves/flathead engines, need to be matched for the heads. you get a 'quence area away from the valves, a 'pocket' around the spark plug that is maybe 10-20% of old combustion chamber- meaning a possible 6.5 or 7:1 compression instead of 5, 5.5 to 1 compression that might have been standard on a distillate or 'all Fuel' engine. Still have a relief underside of head so minimal restriction on intake stroke. If you want to hot rod a flathead engine the old ford hot rodding boks can help some- batter is the Harley K and WR rebuilding, tune up and piston work details. For a Kohler in a Cub Cadet a properly set up K241 with relieved cylinder lipp, LP gas head and popup piston will have about 7:1 compression and next size engine K301 horsepower. Continental /AC G 61 inch engine with the LP pistons can use unleaded premium non-ethanol 91 octane quite well. One domed piston might need a bit of checking on spark plug, but since Cub would run a bit rich anyway would be no real concern, would give just a little more power, might not notice it. Current gasoline even the cheap stuff a couple points mhigher octane than old designs for the mixed distillate- problem for many was the lead used as lubricant. Welch recommends 2 stroke oil premix at 100:1 for general use on older tractors with the soft valve seats, some of old Harleys used that mix with unleaded premium and BMW R60, R50/2s would run happily on that mix. Ford Ns had stellite exhaust valves to begin with, JD 2 bangers tended to ru nso slow that unleaded din't bother them- other flathead engines varied, some Continentals had hard exhaust seats like fords, others had the 'soft' iron seats that would erode at 2000 rpm like the OHVs.
