: I recently purchased a 9N ford (supposed to be a 1948), and the oil in the rear end is low (below the stick). I would like to know what type/weight of oil to put in it. I am pretty sure that it takes the same as an 8N. Last I remember, Ford had a specific oil. Roughly 20W hydraulic oil. I've come to prefer Farmland Super HTP because it doesn't foam as much when cold. One problem in the 'N you need to watch for is water in the oil The pump is at the bottom of the housing and water in the oil can freeze in the winter and break the pump that's part of the aluminum bottom cover casting. The ford owner's manual which is available and the I&T shop manual will have many more useful details. Gerald
