when I got my 9N it took a 12 volt jump to start it. I went to an old wiring diagram I had and noticed that the wires were not of the correct size!! These old 6 volts take large gage wires. Once I replaced the wires the old girl started right up. : : Bought it in May and replaced battery and solenoid immediately. Has always been hard starting when hot, but now just "clicks". Alternator and starter both rebuilt; belt and belt tension seem to be fine. Such a simple igntion system, but I must be missing something? : Before you waste a lot of time trouble shooting, check and clean the battery connections. Check them by turning on the lights or attaching a light, but not directly to the battery. Then with the light on, try to start. If the problem is a battery connection as I generally find, the light will go out at the click and return when you release the start switch. : Every time a battery operated starter clicks for me (had that twice last Thursday) its been either a bad (e.g. nearly dead) battery or battery connection. Then I get out the battery post cleaning brush and brighten up the post AND the lug on the battery wire and I get vroom instead of click. : The modern battery unless sealed all over, isn't sealed at the post. So the connections are constantly bathed in sulfuric acid fumes which leads to corrosion. I think the next battery I get is going to get sealed around the posts with black jack since fancier things like epoxy or silicone seal hasn't helped. : A starter has to pull several hundred amps from a battery, so a connection that will run lights still won't crank the engine over. : I had an 8N and I recall it wasn't great on starting until I took the starter to the local automotive electric shop and had new bearings and brushes installed. Then it cranked fine on 6 volts. : Gerald
