: : : I have a leak in the radiator of my JD 520. : : I found it when I removed the grill. There was about 5 inches of grass dust and stuff burying the bottom 3rd of the radiator. I don't think anyone had cleaned it in years. After I cleaned it out I can see the bottom of the radiator is wet but I can't locate a hole. It leaks at a pretty good rate. The radiator is not really rotted. Can anyone tell me my options? : : Would I be better off trying a stop leak or getting it soldered or even recored? : : Thanks : : Tom from western NY : Take it to the radiator shop. could just need solderng but he will try to sell a core job The proper way would be to take it to a radiator shop and spend some bucks - or if your in a pinch - an old trick I've used. Take a box of black peper and dump it into the raditor and run the tractor for a while. The black peper will fill the hole and stop the leak if it isnt too big. (50's & 60's solution) For the 1990's go and buy on of those radiator leak stop products from the auto store and use that in place of the black peper. I've still got some old trucks and tractors running on the stuff years later. Another trick if your desperate is to use body filler to plug the leak but be careful not to cut out too much of the radiator area because its needed to cool the engine. One truck's radiator lasted for 7 years on this untill it finally rotted altogether. The tricks above aren't pretty and need to be watched carefully as to not overheat an engine. John Deer would probably turn in grave if he found out. But they are cheep and quick and at harvest a down piece of equipment is worthless making the above pretty appealing.
