: : Sometimes it helps to fill the filter reservoir up with oil and let set for a couple of hours to aid in reprimeing the oil pump.
: i did that when putting fresh oil in..

: Another way is to disconnect the line that the oil filter is plumbed in at the rear of the block and pump oil in.
: the line where it splits and goes to gauge and also to filter canister??

: If pump fails to prime you may have to consider dropping the pan and look and see if there is other problems.

: if i have to drop pan, what sort of stuff is there to actaually look for?

: : GEO

: thanks for you helpful response.

Pull the oil pump and take the side cover off of it. Inspect the impellers (star looking things) for chipped teeth and bad scoring on the sides. Also look at the pump bottom and top plate where the impellers spin against. Look for bad scoring. If you find things chewed up, you've found the problem. Either replace the pump or have it rebuilt. Another thing that can do it, but less likely, is something stuck in the pressure relief valve. It is a plunger with a spring behind it. Take it apart and look for something that might have been caught in it, sticking it open. If so, again, your problem should be fixed.
While you are in there, pull a rod cap and look at the bearings. If there is copper showing, might as well replace them while the pan is off. Cheap insurance against more problems.

best Luck

Jeff King

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
