: I'm thinking of buying a new JD 4600 for general use on 155 acres. A lot of mowing, loader usage, and tillage. I'm looking at the hydrostatic model because of the loader and mower use. Does anyone have information on how the JD smaller tractors hold up? It is 34.5 PTO hp.

Personally, I would not opt for the hydrostatic transmission, but get the 12x12 power reverser for loader work. The Power Reverser is neat, since you don't have to operate the main clutch to shift direction. It operates an automatic wet clutch, so it's as easy to use as a hydrostat, but delivers more of the HP to the wheels, since the driveline is shaft (as opposed to oil) coupled.

In that case, the 4500 is the better deal. The 4600 is exactly the same, except they pushed the RPM up 100 more to gain that extra 3 HP. The 4600 is $1500 more then the 4500 and the HST is another $1000 more.

It also sounds like your place is a little large for a 4000 series machine. I'd seriously think about a 5310 or 5410 instead (although that series is more costly). The 5000 series has significantly larger engines (and everything else), so they will do the work more quickly with less strain on the machine.

BTW, I've been down this path already and have pretty much settled on a 4500. I have far less acreage and don't need the tractor for heavy use. I already have a 420C crawler/dozer for that. It's pretty formidible with the blade on one end and a bush hog on the other! My problem is that my old machines are not suitable for adding a loader to......

As far as the reliability goes, no one really knows yet. The 4000 series has just come out. The engines are evolutions on the older small line, coming from Yanmar. The rest of the tractor is from the Georgia plant, and is new. However, they certainly look well built, and JD generally does not make a lot of mistakes (although I certainly can think of a few doozies over the decades!). I'm going to take the plunge right after Christmas (a belated present to myself).
